iPhone 4 Screen Shattered To Test Durability Claims

iPhone lovers should probably look away now if your sensitive to seeing smashed iPhone screens. We’ve all seen it and done it at some stage, you drop your iPhone or some other device and smash! The whole screen smashes into a million pieces and you desperately pick them up and hope that somehow you can make them fit back together with some glue or something……anything!

Well somehow, iFixYouri have manged to get their hands on the official iPhone 4 shell with its glass face intact, but there was no internal components. They haven’t said how they got them, they just did.

They then decided to set about testing Apple’s claims that this screen was 30 times stronger than plastic and decided to drop it from 3 and a half above the ground. On the third attempt, the screen shattered into the millions of pieces you see below.

The firm didn’t disclose what kind of surface the device was dropped onto, nor investigate whether or not the fact the internal components were missing had any effect on it’s performance.

Apple said earlier this week that the device’s glass screen was “chemically strengthened to be 30 times harder than plastic, more scratch resistant and more durable than ever.”

However iFixYouri make a valid case, that while the glass may be stronger that plastic when you bend it, this doesn’t mean it’s better at withstand sudden impacts, which is how most screens are damaged. “what causes 95% of glass shattering. Not because you bent the glass in your pocket, not because you dropped it and it bent, but really because of sudden impact.”

The firm also argues that apple have made a design flaw in the new device, whereby the glass sits on top of the unit’s aluminium frame, where on previous models it was recessed and protected by a chrome bezel.
