Yes that’s right, your looking at the first few scratches on the iPhone 4 back right there. You may remember when we published a post about the iPhone 4 display shattering, people were saying that it wasn’t a fair test since it was deliberately dropped several times.
Well Engadget were given a review unit of the iPhone 4 prior to this week’s public release (ye for some reason ours was lost in the mail) and in the first hands on with the device it managed to gather several scratches from general use. Now they did say they were minor but it’s still noticeable.
Of course, Apple’s own claim was not to be scratch-proof, but scratch-resistant.
In their advertising, Apple says that the iPhone 4′s aerospace-grade glass is “Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic”. According to them, “the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever.” But, they said it’s 30 times harder than plastic, not 30 times more scratch-resistant than plastic, meaning that “more scratch resistant” might mean just 1 or 2 times more so than plastic, and less of an improvement over glass. Who knows.
With regards to the display, Macrumors are reporting that some users have found some display discoloration issues. A number of there readers reported areas of brown or yellow on the display and it’s even cropping up on Apple’s forums. The display has been one of the main stand out features of this new iPhone, and Steve won’t be impressed with this issue.
We don’t know who widespread the issue is at this time, but several users have reported it, and it’s growing.
