Aussies iPhone 4 Launch Goes Off Without A Hitch – Free Food, Beer and Music

Unlike their neighbors New Zealand, the Aussies seemed to have no problem releasing the iPhone 4. In fact it seemed like it was more of a party than a mad rush to get in the doors.

The iPhone 4 went on sale there at midnight, with carriers Optus, Telstra and Vodafone/3 bending over backwards to ensure the wait was an event in itself.

For Optus customers, Singer Kelly Rowland was on hand to provide some entertainment, and Telstra treated loyal Sydney queuers to Apple-inspired food prepared by MasterChef contestants, including Adam Liaw and Callum Hann. The menu included pork belly with apple sauce, apple tarts, apple crumble and a giant iPhone cake. Yummy!

In the countdown to midnight, the band Kisschasy entertained the crowds before MasterChef judge Matt Preston presented the first in line, Sam Dunster, with the first handset by lifting up the lid on his silver cloche.

But Vodafone customers in Sydney had it easiest, they simply pre-registered their iPhones at 10pm, then headed to the IVY for a lavish party with free food and drinks with martinis being served until 3am. Then at midnight or whenever they wanted, they could just stroll to the Vodafone store and pick up their new iPhone 4.

So not only was the launch very successful and stress free, but there doesn’t appear to be any antenna issues here either. Stephen French, national technology writer for Australia’s The Daily Telegraph, gave a glowing review to Apple’s iPhone 4 on Friday. Using it for nearly a week, he has not dropped calls or noticed any impact on the device’s performance.

In fact he said it was a big improvement on the iPhone 3GS and he had no problems with it at all. So this brings up the question again, are AT&T’s networks just too weak in the US, as suggested yesterday from Norway?
