Right so the press conference has just finished up. Steve Jobs himself was present and as expected it was about the iPhone 4. So here’s a round up of events below:
Well the iPhone 4 is Apple’s most successful product ever and they’ve sold 3 Million iPhone’s Sold in the Last 3 weeks
They’ve been looking into these Antenna issues non-stop for the last 22 days. They say it’s not unique to the iPhone 4, all smartphones experience it. Steve demonstrated how the Blackberry Bold, Droid Eris Samsung Omnia II all lost nearly all signal when held a certain way. However these were very odd grips, which look very awkward and can’t say I’ve ever held a phone that way.
Apple have done extensive testing, and it’s a challenge for the whole industry, and not jut Apple.
Steve knows bars drop when you hold the phone in the “death grip” but it’s being reported that the iPhone 4 has the best antenna out of all the smartphones.
Apple doesn’t seem to be getting too much trouble with it either, only 0.55% have complained about the issue to AppleCare. It has the lowest return rate as well.
The iPhone 3GS’s return rate was 6%, below the smartphone average. Everyone was really happy about that. What were they for the iPhone 4? You’d think at least half these people would be returning their phones. Well, we’ve got the data: it’s 1.7%.”
So return rates are 1/3 than that of the iPhone 3GS, but the iPhone 4 drops 1 call more in every 100 than the iPhone 3GS.
So to keep users happy, everyone gets a free case! If you’ve already bought one, you get a full refund. You can apply online from next week.
Steve says the bumper case solves the issue, and if you’re still not happy bring your iPhone 4 back within 30 days for a full refund.
A software update is coming soon as well to solve the issue with the proximity sensor.
The White iPhone is also going to start shipping at the end of this month. And the international release is happening on July 30th, when the iPhone 4 is coming to 17 more countries, (not South Korea as planned)

There is an Antenna issue with the iPhone 4, apparently it’s in all smartphones, but happens to be more obvious in the iPhone 4. So Apple are giving away free bumpers to fix it
