iPhone 4 Signal Issue Could Be Fixed With Software Update?

I thought that we’d already established that the iPhone 4 antenna issue. The “death grip” causes the iPhone to lose signal since the devices contact with your skin shorts the circuit, causing you to lose signal. We’ll apparently the issue could be solved with a software update.

According to a source in the New York Times, the signal issue is not cause by the hardware, but in fact by the software. The issue is caused by interaction between communication software within the device’s operating system and the antenna, which could be solved with a software update.

One person with direct knowledge of the phone’s design said Thursday that the iPhone 4 exposed a longstanding weakness in the basic communications software inside Apple’s phones and that the reception problems were not caused by an isolated hardware flaw.

Instead, the problems emerged in the complex interaction between specialized communications software and the antenna, said the person, who agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter.

And to add another twist to the story, they report that Steve Jobs didn’t know about the flaws with the antenna design, contrary to what Bloomberg reported.

So if all this turns out to be true, and if the iPhone 4 can be fixed without the need to change the hardware, it looks like no recall will be on the cards, just like the Wall Street Journal reported earlier.

So do you reckon the iPhone 4 can be fixed with a software update?

I guess we’ll find out for certain at Apple’s press event later today
