iOS 4 was rolled out to the iPhone 3G along with the 3GS and of course the iPhone 4. The original iPhone and iPod Touch however didn’t get the update because they weren’t of a high enough spec. Even so, the iPhone 3G was given a limited version of iOS 4, and had no support for multiasking.
Well a customer sent an email to Steve Jobs himself about the issue
I’ve waited patiently through 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, looking for a fix that will make my phone work again. I’ve read the forums that advise me to jailbreak my phone or use some other method so I can downgrade back to a version of iPhone 3, however I’m not prepared to use a method that is not supported by Apple.
And of course Steve gave a fairly straightforward and to the point answer;

And that was all he had to say, but we reckon that the software update could be iOS 4.1. which has been released to developers
Early reports do suggest that the betas do seem to improve performance on the iPhone 3G as well as a couple of other issues.
It seems to address the proximity sensor issue that users were having as well as adding the Game Center that’s been talked about,
