iPhone Chief Hardware Engineer Leaves Apple, Over Antenna Issues?

The New York Times reports that Mark Papermaster, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Devices Hardware Engineering, has left Apple, possible due to the recent antenna issues experienced with the iPhone 4.

Papermaster was only with Apple for 1 year and 4 months after he left IBM and it appears he never really settled into the job to well. No explanation has been provided for his departure, but many are citing the iPhone 4 antenna issues as a possible reason.

Papermaster would have been involved in the design of the new antenna system on the iPhone 4

Inside Apple, he’s “the guy responsible for the antenna” – that’s a quote from a source back on July 23. (Another quote from the same source: “Apparently the antenna guys used to have a big chip on their shoulder. No more.”)

He is being replaced by Bob Mansfield, who is an existing member of Apple’s senior executive team in his role as Senior Vice President of Mac Hardware Engineering.

We don’t know if Papermaster left on his own accord, or wheter or not he was shown the door, but either way I’m fairly certain the iPhone 4 antenna issue has something to do with this.
