Someone May Be Falsifying a Massive Amount of BlackBerry Ltd (BBRY) BBM Reviews

BlackBerry BBM reviews: BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s BBM received 5 million downloads yesterday within 8 hours after it was released. The service, which can be used on Android, BlackBerry and the Apple iPhone is highly touted, and is viewed by many BlackBerry investors as a savior to any “issues” present in the hardware segment.

It’s this success why accusations of fake reviews are so interesting. As this redditor points out, there are some “fishy reviews” for BBM on the Google Play store.

The screenshot provided by the post on r/BlackBerry:

Here are the stats:

  • BBM has an average rating of 4.2 stars out of 86K total reviews
  • Nearly 70% of these are 5-star reviews.
  • A little over 11% are 1-star reviews.
  • A few of the text reviews are nearly identical, but written by different, seemingly unique user profiles.

Two of the identical reviews can be seen above.

From Sandeep Bhardwaj:

“Thanks blackberry. Thank you so much blackberry team. I was waiting this app. Its really great user friendly and..”

From ado ibrahim ghassan:

“Thanks blackberry. Thank you so much blackberry team. I was waiting this…”

Here are a few other more stunning images I captured from BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) BBM’s Google Play site. Identical reviews are surrounded by a red box (that I inserted):

Notice the review surrounded by a green box is the only one that’s slightly different from the others. This one, “written” by Ryan Stuckmaier, also includes the line, “Just kidding, it sucks,” after the copied text. This is a 1-star review amidst mostly 5-star reviews.

Another capture is below:

Notice that “smooth” is a buzzword common to nearly every review of BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) BBM.

Here’s what one user had to say about the interesting situation:

Check out the reviews for yourself. This is clearly a question that needs to be addressed, but so far, I haven’t been able to get ahold of BlackBerry for a comment.

UPDATE 3:00am EST: In a statement from BlackBerry spokesperson Victoria Berry, here’s what the company had to say:

“We have recently been made aware of a number of potentially fake five-star reviews of BBM for Android on Google Play. We do not approve of or condone such activities and are committed to working with Google to resolve this. There are also many genuinely great and useful reviews from our new BBM users on Google Play. We would like to encourage our passionate fans and users to continue to provide true assessments of the BBM experience through the proper channels.”

End update.
