A Few Reasons to Stick With AOL Inc. (AOL) MapQuest

OK, think of a map application.

Don’t feel bad if you only thought of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and/or Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG). Given the recent success Apple’s maps app is having on iPhones, it’s not surprising that other map apps have had to step up their game in order to compete. AOL, Inc. (NYSE:AOL) is aware that its application has been slightly lagging behind the two when it comes to mobile devices, and has thus recently updated its app to MapQuest 4.0. Regardless of the new update however, MapQuest is generally not doing that bad. It’s apparently the second-most used map service for desktop users and recent studies show that more than 40 million people used the service in September alone.

What’s new?

The AOL, Inc. (NYSE:AOL) MapQuest app has been around for quite some time but this new update has completely renovated its image and also improved its search capabilities so that users can navigate a lot faster on the app.

It claims: “Our app can guide you with voice navigation, route you around accidents, and even help you find cheap gas. You can even customize your experience with multi-stop directions, robust bookmarking options, handy sharing features and automatic traffic re-routing. MapQuest is here to help get you where you need to go, wherever life takes you.”

MapQuest 4.0 requires iOS 7 in order to function. You can download it for free or purchase the ad-free app for $3.99.

New characteristics

-You can now bookmark particular routes or locations on the AOL, Inc. (NYSE:AOL) MapQuest app..

- A status bar shows the user the full route statistics (time and distance left in the journey and current location), something Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) are lacking in their own apps.

-An improved, sleek and eye-catching style- more user-friendly and has adopted the iOS 7 design.

-Mute mode that enables you to turn off the voice guidance.

-Different colors show you live traffic conditions on the road, ie. red indicates heavy traffic. Furthermore, the new app makes use of colors by marking highways with blue lines and main arteries in yellow.

-Alerts as to possible closures or toll roads you may encounter on your route. A notification pops up if the app recognizes a different route you could take in order to save time.

-Ability to share your location with friends and family.

-Location searches be it gas stations or coffee shops.
